An Important Announcement About the Future of CMD

Over the past two years, Custom Music Discs has grown far beyond what we originally imagined. What started as a small project has evolved into a collection of over a hundred custom music discs, custom structures, an in-game Wiki, Lite Mode, and so much more.

As CMD continues to grow, we've reached a point where some of the systems that made sense in the early days are beginning to hold the project back.

Because of that, the next major CMD update will introduce several fundamental changes behind the scenes. While some of these changes will temporarily affect existing worlds, they're designed to give CMD a much stronger foundation for the future.

We wanted to let everyone know about these changes ahead of time so there are no surprises when the update arrives.

🔧 A One-Time Migration

The next update will reorganise many of CMD's internal systems to make development more streamlined, easier to maintain, and much more consistent going forward.

Unfortunately, this means some existing discs from earlier waves may temporarily lose their textures, sounds, or both after updating.

The good news is:

  • ✅ Your worlds will continue to work normally.

  • ✅ Your music discs won't disappear.

  • ✅ Most newer-wave discs won't be affected at all.

If one or more of your older discs are affected, you'll simply need to recraft them to restore them. While this does require some materials, it allows you to recover the disc without starting over.

This should be a one-time migration, paving the way for smoother updates in the future.

📅 A New Versioning System

Beginning with the next release, CMD will adopt Minecraft's version numbering instead of our own.

Rather than releasing CMD v9, the next version will be named something like:

CMD 26.2 (or 26.3, depending on release timing).

This change better reflects how CMD will now be developed.

Instead of moving from v9 to v10 to v11, CMD will follow Minecraft's yearly release cycle. Throughout the year, we'll add new content through smaller drops or, if real life gets busy, one larger update-while remaining on the same yearly version.

This should make it much easier to understand which Minecraft version CMD is built for.

🎵 Wave Changes

We're also simplifying the way music discs are organised.

The following waves will be merged:

  • Wave 2 + Wave 3

  • Wave 7 + Wave 8

This reduces the total number of waves from 9 to 7.

The reason is simple: these were our smallest waves, and combining them creates a cleaner, more balanced progression that works much better with CMD's newer advancement trees.

🖼️ New Handmade Project Icons

One of the changes we're most excited about isn't technical at all.

With the next update, all CMD project icons will be replaced with brand-new handmade versions.

The current icons were AI-generated during CMD's early development. Since then, the conversation around AI-generated assets has changed significantly, and we've heard the community's concerns. We want CMD's presentation to better reflect the care and creativity that goes into the project.

The new icons are something we're especially proud of because they start inside Minecraft itself. Each icon is built in-game, then transformed into the final artwork you see across our pages and downloads.

It's a small detail, but one that feels much more personal and true to CMD.

❤️ Looking Forward

We know changes like these can be a little inconvenient, especially when they affect existing worlds. That's why we wanted to share them well in advance.

Every one of these decisions has been made with a single goal in mind:

Building a stronger, more consistent, and easier-to-maintain future for Custom Music Discs.

The next update marks the beginning of a new chapter for CMD. While there may be a few bumps during the transition, we're confident these improvements will make future updates more enjoyable—for both players and development alike.

Thank you for continuing to support Custom Music Discs over the past two years. We can't wait to show you what's coming next.

The future of CMD starts here. 🎵
